Lessons from Raleigh

This is a long over-due post, but I thought it would be great to share with you all some of my experiences fundraising for the supposed-to-be expedition Autumn 2007, but now should-be-barring-any unforeseen-circumtances expedition Summer 2008.
Side note: I'm still so in love with my sunflowers!!!! http://livyen.blogspot.com/2008/03/sunflowers.html
*sayang!*
____
ANYWAY!
Through Raleigh...
I've learnt how to fundraise.... aka be a 'professional-beggar'

Sold cupcakes.... RM5 each..

*yeah, rip-off I know! But super cute la! I remember customers asking me whether they are edible!*

NOTE: They were donated courtesy of Shalia. Lovely lady who agreed to make them for me! Sold almost all of them bout 90 I think :) But in all, the 1U event wasn't a success. Another lesson to be learnt! Wanna know more? Gimme a buzz!

Sold old junks... Kudos to ZY for the junk-collecting effort. Public transport summore!

Tribute to the man who did it all with public transport! *salute*
Bet you would never want to go through that again now that you can 'lou lup' the little mousedeer that drinks like a camel already! *winks*
*Thanks! We couldn't have made it by for your efforts. And Vincent's 24/7 help too!*
Not forgetting the others who dropped by to support us!

We've learnt how to give press-interviews....

(Vincent, ZY and I, with Sharmini and The Star (R.A.G.E.) photographer)

NOTE: Totally unexpected call for an interview! As all I wanted was for them to publish a short write-up about our fundraising event at 1 Utama. But yeah, enjoyable experience!

(Picture credits: ZY's camera, picture taken by Christal)

And I've made some wonderful friends along the way....

(From left: Zhi Yong, myself, Szu Mei, Choon Wei?, BJ, KarLye, Xin Tong (white), Len Foong (green), Lee Lee)
NOTE: Sorry, that I've neglected all of you lately. But, I really need to concentrate on the impending exams. 3 months is not a long way to go with the crazy amount of stuff I have to do! Promise to make it up to you guys!

Expedition

"So when are you going on Expedition ah?"

The above is a sure-fire question to any new Raleigh (RIKL) member(s) during any post-IW (Introduction Weekend) yumcha sessions. (Yeah, I've never been on any IW, but I've been to enough (though not many) yumcha sessions to know well enough *winks*)

I read an article in The Star (Youth 2) today about the joint project between UNDP and Honda in order to provide youths in the rural areas of Sabah and Sarawak (indigenious communities, in particular) with an opportunity to further their education post-SPM. http://thestar.com.my/youth2/story.asp?file=/2008/3/19/youth2/20080318174904&sec=youth2

I can't help but to think of the impact of the Raleigh projects on the lives of these communties. Yes, we may build schools, community halls and kindergartens in the interiors of Sabah all purported to be in the the benefits of the local communities. We may also do environmental research projects, clean sea-beds, clear hiking trials; again purported to be for the benefit of the community and for the environment as a whole. But, to what extent do our contribution help towards improving the lives of the communities in rural Sabah?

Raleigh has received flak from some parties (read it somewhere, but can't retrace the source now) who argued that such projects take away job opportunities of the locals instead of creating existing ones for them. They are left with a reduced avenue of income, as the job opportunities created by such construction projects are taken over by a bunch of youths, who are there only for 10 weeks.

I am adamant that the pros outweigh the cons. Hence, do not let these criticisms put you off joining a Raleigh expedition; for the reasons laid down below:

1. Yes, admittedly such programmes may take away the local's source of income. But only marginally. Locals are still involved in such projects to a certain extent.

2. Plus, building kindergartens, schools, libraries would provide locals with better facilities to facilitate their access to education, which in return would improve the lives of the community (as a whole).

3. The creation of new hiking trials etc, would create job opportunities for locals. Particularly in the eco-tourism industry.

4. Environmental research - need I say more?

Thus, to the prospective venturers out there (if any), do think about your main aims of going on an Expedition. And I sincerely hope that your reasons for going on one is for the noble intention of improving the lives of the communities and environment in Sabah, and not merely for personal pursuits.

Yes, I know of some individuals who would like to go on an Expedition (5, 7, or 10 week) merely because it is

"Wow, so cool to be in the jungle for 10 weeks!"
"OMG, I love outdoor activities!"
"Cool! I get to climb Mt. K and gain a Open Water Diving Licence during that 10 weeks!"

or simply because

"Yay! I enjoy meeting new people (esp. angmohs! *doh!*)"

I would be the first to admit that I (post-SPM, when I first conceived the ideas of going on a Raleigh expedition) was one who thought of, "Wow I like the outdoors, and it would be so cool to spend 10 weeks in the jungle with new people from all around the world!" (Yeah, I was that shallow!)

8 years down the road, I think there's more to the crazy jungle adventure out there! Thus, to all prospective venturers, do think about your motivations for going on an expedition. And I assure you, your experience will be more worthwhile!

As for me, I've fundraised with the intention of going on Expedition (Autumn 2007) only to pull out last-minute due to CLP commitments! (A decision that I've no regrets on, in fact it was a wise one!)

However, I've learnt a lot from the Fundraising events and just from helping out in the December IW (didn't do much except for taking a few phone calls).

Speaking to new members and ex-venturers have indeed been an eye-opener towards my personal reasons for going on an expedition. Most emphasise on the cool adventure, beautiful scenery and experiences during the 10 weeks in Sabah. But, I'm sure, behind those beautiful tales, there are some untold/hidden tales of personal growth and development coupled with a sense of fulfilment and achievement, knowing that they have done something to improve the lives of people in Sabah.

Ex-venturers, do think about what you have done in Sabah, and let me know if I'm right.

Hence, I'm sure that come May 2008, when I submit my application for the 5 weeker in July, my personal statement would definitely be a lot more different from the pretty much self-centered one I wrote in February 2007! *touchwood, no more unforeseen obstacles!*

Raleigh is NOT only about going on expedition, and the whole obsession about going on expedition should take a back-seat in preference for other aims.

1. Community Development
2. Environmental Conservation
3. Personal Growth
4. Youth Development
5. Special Interest Groups

All these, taken cummulatively would make Raleigh a much more worthwhile experience altogether.

Sunflowers!!!

*omigosh!*

After feeling like this (see picture below) for the past week....

Yeah, was pretty much in my "sayang me" mode for the past week. I.e. lazy, demotivated and well... just in need of a hug I guess...

Something brightened up my day....

Received a MMS from Mum in the evening. And it was a lovely picture.... My favourite flowers, FINALLY in my own garden *yay to Mum and Aunty next door who provided us with the seeds!*

And coincidentally (or not), lovely sunflowers are blooming in both our gardens (mine and the neighbour's). I noticed the blooms next door when I was back for the elections last week, and was so tempted to walk over to take pictures of them, but I hesitated :)

And a week later... *YAY!* Flowers to call my (or rather Mum's) own!!!!

Lovely flowers, aren't they?
(Could have a better pic with a better camera though... Time to go camera shopping! :P)

Lunch

My (ex) Uni addresses me as Miss Li Vyen V. Tham in all their correspondences and alumni emails. I find this funny. But still, it's better than being known as Li Tham. I ABSOLUTELY hate it! Vyen Tham doesn't sound half as bad! But Li Tham, cannot make it la!!!

____

ANYWAY....

It's a wonder how quickly people adapt to their surroundings.
For the past 3 years, I've had bread and ONLY bread for lunch..... *jelak*

But now, I'm back to the good old habit of Asian food for lunch. *lols* Rice, and/or noodles....

Omelette (with carrots) and fried watercress (西洋菜??)

(PS: I just love this picture. It's so colourful. But well, could have done better with a proper camera with macro function.... This is the best I could do with my phone camera.)

Noodles + Fishball + Siew Pak Choy

Complete with Cili padi of course! But I'm one of the few weird fellas who just use them for the spicy tinge... Don't take them directly. The 'green' taste is revolting! :P

Pasta - Asian (Li Vyen) style... Mushrooms (my fav!) and beef sausages (Ramli burger brand) if I'm not mistaken...

*pls VCKY don't kill me for posting pics of food again! *pleads* It's not torture! :P

Caricatures

Note: Oh dear! Just realised I'll be missing out on the race on Sunday. Classes at the Torture Camp. *sulks*
___
The Formula 1 season of 2008/09 officially kicks start today with the Australian GP. Friday practices, Saturday qualifying and Sunday racedays! Ah!!! My weekends are gonna be so fun from now on... :P I'm so looking forward to it!
No more Mika, no more Kimi, BUT... here comes Heikki!

Was browsing through my usual sites for Formula 1 gossips, updates and news when I chanced upon some caricatures of drivers, drawn by their teammates. It was for a charity event last season (not sure what the event was though). I thought the drawings were refreshing....
Errrmmm, 'showcasing' the 'artistic side' of the drivers...

Here's the link

(Not sure if the link is viewable by non-forum members, but do give it a try)
I personally liked the one done by Kimi of Massa and the one by Heidfeld of Kubica.

BTW, do try out http://newsnow.co.uk/ for international news. And of course, http://www.f1-mclaren.de/ for Formula 1 updates *yay-ness*

And now, for the start of another thrilling season....

My team....

Team McLaren Mercedes

And its boss....

Please Ron, don't screw up anymore this season...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/nuvisionmedia/184201331/

And my man this season...

Hekki Kovalainen

(A conscious choice since I won't support any team other than the Silver Arrows, plus I hate Lewis)

Yeah, I know that's a picture of him in a Renault outfit...

Ridiculous

This is ridiculous!

I was timing myself while I attempted to complete a Tort question (Personal Injury claims). Exam requirements, Part A and B to be completed in 1 hour 30 minutes.

This is how long I took: 2 hour 15 minutes.

And the number of pages I churned out: 16 pages!!!!! YES! You read it right, 16 freaking pages!!!! Alright, my writing might have been big and horrible, but still, at best, it would have been 14 pages, minimum!

It's ridiculous and I totally agree with Mr. Rajan (Tan's pronounciation) that the amount of things they require us to write in the given time is totally ridiculous. I need to figure out a way to fit everything in precisely and accurately. Mind you, I had an answer outline for that question and it took me a freaking 2 hour 15 minutes to complete that task! I think I would have taken longer had I attempted to do a fresh question. Freaking hell! *Oh Lord!*

My writing was HORRIBLE; (鬼画符) (Cantonese) (Ghost drawing a 'talisman'??? (lit.)) an absolute mess, and my English was pathetic; given the time constraints. I think, I would not be able to figure out my cacography and what I wrote if I were to proof-read it.
But still, I wasn't able to finish within the 1.5 hours.... Man!!!!!!

Could anyone be kind enough to enlighten me on how to write faster?

THIS IS SUCH A TORTURE!!!!!

Could any kind soul offer me a hug and calm me down??? Adrenaline's still pumping after the 16 page writing spree.... MADNESS! *sot sot dei di...*

-LV-
*breathes in, out, in, out, in, out.... calms down after the 16page writing spree...
*80 more pages to go for PS: I Love You...

Raceday: Melbourne, Australia

The Formula 1 season will begin in 3 days time. Friday testing, Saturday qualifying and Sunday raceday. Australia; 16th March 2008 will be the first stop of the season, followed by back-to-back races in Malaysia and Bahrain.

Malaysia first hosted Formula 1 races back in 1999, and it was during then my interest in this sport grew. Mika Hakkinen was the man to beat back then, and Michael Schumacher, his nemesis. Hakkinen has since retired and Schumacher has gone on to take a multiplicity of world titles and has now retired as well. I could still recall the days when I was a true-blue Hakkinen and McLaren fan, till the day Hakkinen retired.

Mika Hakkinen, my favourite driver of all times...

Kimi then joined the fray. Things did not look good for McLaren as they went through one of their worst few seasons. Kimi has since left McLaren (and been branded a traitor by some McLaren diehards, oh well.... the Ferrari-McLaren debate) and is the newly crowned world champion. Well done!

2007/08 was a season of ups and downs for McLaren. 2 new drivers joined the team; double world champion Fernando Alonso, and newbie Lewis Hamilton. Watching Formula 1 races in UK (was studying there then) did not contribute much towards my liking towards Hamilton. Yes, he was good for a rookie, but biased reporting on ITV and the British press made it revolting! And so, I supported Alonso. Then came the McLaren-Ferrari Spy Espionage. They were not innocent, and were lucky to have gotten away with minimal punishment i.e. being stuckoff the Constructors Championship.

The last race in China was interesting. Glad that Lewis got knocked off early in the race, and that left Fernando in the hunt for the world title. But alas, the dark horse won the race! Kimi Raikkonen (my 'ex') was crowned the World Champion 2007/08.

As much as I'm looking forward to the season opener this weekend, I'm indifferent. I still support Team McLaren Mercedes, but I'm not as enthusiastic and passionate as before. I'm indifferent, mainly because I don't support Lewis, and oh well.... Heikki Kovalainen.... I'll decide come Melbourne.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/gnd/1734818261/

Alonso will face an uphill task this season, having rejoined Renault; judging from the team's dismal performance last year.

No more Mika, no more Kimi, no more Fernando... Should there be a World Champion from McLaren, let it be Heikki. Lewis is getting too big-headed for his own good...

Will MP4-23 impress? We will know in 3 days time....

-LV-
*looking forward to Melbourne in 3 days time, but is left without a driver to support. Anyhow, Team McLaren Mercedes here we come!

Oh yes! Time to register for the McLaren Formula 1 Grand Prix League... :P

The Story About Bob

I do try to avoid, by all means possible from making visits to mechanics. Frankly speaking, I detest these trips as I find them intimidating. I find myself in an extremely vulnerable position, and I hate that.

I know nuts about cars and machines and when the time calls for a trip to the mechanic, I would procastinate or perhaps ask dear ol' dad to do the deed. *smiles* Being completely clueless makes me an easy 'prey' for those mechanics. Big 'waterfish' (水鱼)! I know that I'll be at their mercy, and needless to say, these chaps often take advantage of my cluelessness! Darn!

Bob's been sick for quite a bit lately and I decided to bring him to the workshop to get things sorted out (after days of procastinating). Ah Meng (fictional name) 'diagnosed' him and the recommended course of treatment was to replace the distributor or carburator (whatever that is...). And the clueless me agreed.
Got it sorted out, went for a test drive and everything seemed fine. I paid up and left. I did have the hunch that I was and have been an extremely big waterfish, but well, I just shrugged, paid up and left. Not like I was left with a choice anyway. It's like a situation that Tan (my lecturer) put forth to us in class.
Doctor tells patient to sign Form A, B, C and D. And more often than not, the patient will sign blindly. Not like they have a choice anyway. Don't sign and you will be left to die..... No consent, no treatment!
Likewise here, 'doctor' tells me that this needs to be changed, blah blah blah.... and "Yes" I said. "No worries, I'm sure to be able to get him later!" I thought to myself. Off I went.

Sure enough Bob laid still when I put my keys in the ignition 3 days later. The very morning I was supposed to leave for a long weekend back in my hometown. And I was left cursing my luck (or lack of it!). Called Ah Kong (fictional name) from the same workshop and got him to sort the problem out, and yet, I was fitted with a lousy re-con sparepart. Oh well, I was left reeling. And I hate it, I would have liked to argue (read: reason) with him for a better replacement (don't mind paying a lil' bit more for a better one as the re-con stuff won't last me long anyway). But well, as I lack knowledge on such stuff, I was left to keep my mouth shut. And I hate it! :( Kena tipu la, what else!

Bob: Exposed

Thank God, I managed to bring Bob home and to my usual mechanic. Got him fixed again and he's hale and hearty now. *touchwood!*

All at an increased expense. Darn!

9 months of Chambering = work like a dog (I think chambees have more horrible lives...)

Petrol price increase, toll charges increase, YET we're stuck with a meagre sum.... Kais pagi makan pagi, kais petang makan petang.... *haih!* Think I'll have to buy a house with a big garden... Need not pay for food then, everyday makan rumput only la!

Doodling *pointless post*

Was doodling while doing a 'memory jog' during Tort revision class today. And this is what I ended up with (of course, with some help from SW! I knew I could trust her for that! *winks*)

And my writing changed from horrible to absolutely horrendous....

My errrmmm... 'notes' for today

In comparison to what I usually come up with...

Oh yeah, as much as I like my phone; its lack of 'auto-focus' function and low quality photographs taken in low light conditions does irk me at times... *argh!* Should have taken bro's phone and given him this instead.... :P

This might be the cue to go camera shopping soon... *teehee* Strike lottery dulu!

An enjoyable Monday, back to reality on Tuesday

Took Bob (my car, since Mel can name hers Betty, why can't mine be Bob?) to the doctor's today. Got some of his internal organs sorted out, and off home we went. That pretty much sums up the earlier bit of my day.

Spent the rest of my evening in Selayang GH (Hospital Selayang), where I saw the most interesting signs of all. The doctor's on-call room, is labelled as "Bilik Atas Panggilan". *omigosh*

That's a super direct translation man! Can't they just put it as "Bilik 'On-Call'" or some "Bilik (whatever)" rather than do a super direct translation? Memalu-fy-ing betul!

Ah! Back to this tomorrow! The journey to and from BTC! Such is life...

Food

Things that I've made over the past few months...

Chocolate Cupcakes for Mel's Birthday (though I cheated - It was from a premix, but the peanut butter 'gunk' on top of it is self-made)

Fried 'Nien-Gao', with sweet potato and yam

Raisin Scones
(Note: This is a picture of the very first batch of scones I made. And they do NO justice to my now perfected recipe. (Ask Mel :P) The 'descendants' of this first batch surely look and taste a zillion times nicer than their ancestors.

Beef + Raddish + Carrot Soup (A personal fav.)

Chicken floss

My 'lazy-to-cook-all-dumped-into-one-pot' stew. (It's been increasingly common lately, due to lack of time, exhaustion and pure laziness. *Guilty as charged!*

Poor Linguistic Skills

Was on the phone with KH today, when we decided to be random and spoke in Mandarin. *ciak lat man!*

It never did occur to me that my command of the language could reach such point of deterioration, jst within a span of 6 months! It's an utter disgrace. *lols* Yiwen would kill me! Time flies, but it was just NOT TOO LONG ago where I could speak comfortably (albeit not fluently) in Mandarin on a daily basis. And YES, I could order food in a restaurant in Mandarin too! But now, I doubt... *lols* Oh yes, I was also able to understand the heavy Beijing accent back then! Alas, things have changed now.

But yeah, my attempts to speak the language today was indeed a laughable effort. Must put more effort to practice it!

As I'm sitting here, in front of my telly half-watching German Open, whilst typing this blog entry (Lee Hyun Il is winning btw) it dawned upon me that I'm a Jack of all trades, but master of none when it comes to languages. Speak or at least understand Malay, English, Cantonese, Mandarin, 'Sun Ning' dialect (more about that later)... but honestly speaking, I can't string a full sentence in formal Cantonese and Mandarin. French and Korean are negligble as they are Sdn, Bhd. Conversational purposes ... still fine, but need to tokok-tambah a lot of English and BM here and there. I could still recall the early days when I first knew Yiwen and Qiong. The poor girls had difficulties understanding my sentences as I tended to slot in some English words here and there. *lols* Could still remember the amount of cursing I got from Yiwen especially, for polluting the language. But well, 12 months later, she understands me perfectly! Man, I miss that girl! But still, my Cantonese and Mandarin are still somethings to work on I guess!

Alright, a new resolution apart from passing CLP!

Boring Sunday Night

I just got back from a heavy on-slaught of weekend classes at BTC. Decided to take the night off to allow my dead brain-cells to regenerate. Took my own sweet time decided what to make for dinner and settled on a normal stir fry veg and ginger chicken. Had originally intended to make my 'dump-all-into-the-pot-and-let-it-cook' stew. But decided against it, as it is a rarity that I get to have dinner at home (AND at proper dinner time, i.e. not 10pm) nowadays.

Propped myself down on the sofa, with my papers and magazines for reading pleasure. And I did try, by all means to stay away from the internet and computer, thus, I turned on the television and channel surfed for quite a bit. To my dismay, I discovered that television programmes on Sunday nights are nothing but a pile of crap. Not a single noteworthy sitcom, drama or movie on air. And I've resorted to watching the best of the rest, Kiera Knightley "Pride and Prejudice". I'm never a fan of such old period dramas, hence my attention span to the show now is probably less than 10%. Which probably explains why I'm typing out this blog entry at this point.

The German Open 2008 (badminton) on Supersport is nothing to shout about either. Lee Hyun Il of Korea vs Sasaki Sho of Japan. BORING!

I can't wait for the 2008 Formula 1 season to start on 16th March 2008! Now, that's something to look forward to!

Mimpi Ngeriku!

4 more months till dooms day and I think the thought if CLP itself bothers me! Revision's gonna start this Monday, and that surely adds in to the 'mood' and adrenaline rush.

Anyway, had this bad dream last night that made me wake up and lie in bed trying to make sense of it. It just seemed too realistic.

To put everything into context, I'm taking 5 subjects for CLP; Criminal Procedure, Civil Procedure, General Paper (consisting of 2 subjects; Tort & Contract), Evidence and Professional Practice (which consists of 5 subjects; Land Law, Bankruptcy, Wills & Probate, Ethics, Advocacy). Yup, its 10 bloody subjects bundled into 5 papers. *cis!*

I was sitting in the exam hall where I was to sit for my Professional Practice paper that fateful morning. Part A - Ethics, Edvocacy; Part B - Bankruptcy, Land and Probate. And OMG! I forgot to study Ethics and Advocacy. So that the whole of Part A of the paper gone! A good 40%!!!!! Which means I'm surely gonna fail the paper, no matter what! It's really scary and is certainly a dream I hope not to repeat in the near future!

So, I was glad to have woke up and realised, "Rupa-rupanya, aku hanya bermimpi!" Thank God! I guess this explains the throbbing headache for the entire day! Too much stress di! Must pass!

HOWEVER....

Strangely enough, I go to class to relax and to enjoy the company of my friends. Therefore, SW and HP always kena kacau....(But kinda quiet lately, quite drained out.) Which leads me to think that I may be (and for SW to label me) a Singaporean. (oh well, that's another story for another time!)

*Tadah!* My 'bibles'. Even more important than the 'Chinese bible' aka the 万字簿 (i.e. the 4 digit book usually found in Chinese homes!) I enjoy flicking through it ;) And NO, I don't buy 4Ds nor 3Ds.

*bracing herself for a weekend of hell. Saturday 1030am - 715pm; Sunday 9am - 5.15pm. I think I'm only gonna see the sunrise and sunset in National Geographic Channel. Sigh!!! :(

GOOD NIGHT and GOOD LUCK!

P.S. I Love You

I've been indulging in a lot of leisure reading recently, a long forgotten hobby of mine. I've never had the time to read much during secondary school as I was constantly shuttling between tuition classes, co-curricular activities and sports commitments. So, it was only during my 2nd year in Manchester that I've joined the Central Library and gained access to the enormous collection of books; biographies and fiction.

I rarely read when I'm in Malaysia. Mainly because of the lack of access to books. The library's too far away and too much of a hassle to brave the traffic jams to get to Perpustakaan Negara (opposite IJN) just to borrow 2 books, only to go through the same traumatic process to return it 2 weeks later. Secondly, I can't bring myself to spend a good RM35 on a book of which I know would be read only once. And within 3 days, if I'm up to it. Imagine: 400pages = RM35 = 3 days. *poof* goes your money! Thirdly, looking for a space to store these books is another headache! But then, now that I'm back home (for good) and enjoying the good life here (It's fun being home!), I guess I do need to get a nice book once in a while to entertain myself.

ANYWAY....

I was reading "My Sister's Keeper" by Jodi Picoult when my attention was deviated towards this book; "P.S. I Love You" by Cecilia Ahern.

It has been adapted to a motion picture i.e. movie starring Hillary Swank and Gerard Butler. But, I wasn't fortunate enough to have to opportunity to watch the movie. So, I have to make do with the book.

The synopsis is as follows...

Holly and Gerry are childhood sweethearts and it's hard to imagine them without each other. Tragedy strikes when Gerry is diagnosed and subsequently succumbs to brain tumour. Holly, like the rest of us finds it hard to come to terms with her loss.

Until one day, she receives a call from her mother stating that there is a letter for her. It turns out that the letter consists of a bundle of notes, one for each month (lasting 10 months) from Gerry, aimed to guide her gently towards a life without him. Each ending with P.S. I Love You.

This sounds silly, but the book did give me the creeps during the first few chapters. It was weird reading about the notes Gerry left before his death. But a few chapters later, I eased into the idea of the notes which formed the crux of this book. I'm at note number 4 now, where Gerry told Holly to pack all his possessions and to give them away to his intended receipients. As much as she is reluctant to do it, she knows that it has to be done; and that life has to move on.

Will update more when I'm done with the book! Later... 6 more notes to go!

My Reply

Dear SW,

My reply (in blue) to our *ahem* academic debate....

(1) You mentioned about a patient who is heavily dependent on drugs and machines for survival. There are major differences between an ‘omission’ act like withdrawing the consumption of drugs and switching off the life- machine, compared to a ‘killing with an action’ like asking someone to strangle him or stab him till death. The patient in the first category is allowing the ‘disease’ or ‘illness’ itself to kill him ‘naturally’ by withdrawing from any external help for survival, which is in some sense similar to a cancer patient who refuses to undergo chemotherapy (and we don’t usually call that ‘euthanasia’). But the latter is equivalent to a suicidal act by deliberately accelerated the process of dying. The two forms of ‘euthanasia’ would need separate discussions regarding the different ethical issues attached to them.

I totally agree with you on this point as I have 'jumped the gun' in my discussion about euthanasia. I deliberately omitted to discuss both active and passive euthanasia. Well, blog post... not thesis writing... so malas a bit mah! Btw, thanks for the clear definition.....

(2) You mentioned also that ‘euthanasia’ is different from an express sanction of suicide. Let consider a hypothesis example of this teenager who is an outcast from his societies, despised by all people in his surroundings and find life extremely meaningless and hence decided to commit suicide. Applying your three ‘reasons’ of why euthanasia should be allowed: (a) the teenager should be given the choice to live the life he desires, including ending it; (b) he is deprived of his means of communications (though in a different sense) in that he is an outcast and no one is willing to listen to him, and (c) he understands the nature and consequences of his action. Question: should he be allowed to take his own life away?
-->
YES
So long as he is competent, his wishes should be respected.
Autonomy triumphs.

(3) There are some conflicts between the second and third reasons that you mentioned. I wonder how a competent adult manage to express his desire to die if he is not able to communicate. And if he is able to express such desire, it means that he is still able to express his own feelings, and hence according to your second reason, his life is not meaningless. So he shouldn’t be allowed to die.

In this context, I am therefore proposing for healthcare practitioners to give rise to living wills and perhaps, to a certain extent allow for PAS (physician assisted suicide). The individual, in giving rise to his wish for euthanasia (in the future), would do by means of a living will. Don't think that there's a conflict in my arguments as such. Expression of feelings and intention is done when he had 'testamentary capacity', so as to allow for PAS in the future.

The main purpose of wills (as we learnted from our Wills & Probate lectures... if we managed to stay awake ;) ) is to give rise to the intention of the testator upon the occurence of an event. In giving rise to this intention, so long as one has testamentary capacity, the individual's intentions as to how his property is to be divided amongst the intended beneficiaries ought to be respected, and not questioned.

Likewise, in giving rise to PAS, the individual's wishes would be documented. And when his condition reaches the point when he no longer wishes to continue on living, the physician ought to invoke the said living will and administer a dose of lethal injection so as to ease his passage.....

PS: Not really thinking straight right now, so arguments might be a bit patchy and all over the place... We shall battle it out in class tomorrow! :P
